Dog Birthday Party Celebration: Poppy Turns 6
The only thing better than a birthday party is a dog birthday party. Poppy turned 6 last week so of course, we had to celebrate and spoil her a little more than she gets spoiled all of the other 364 days in the year.
When planning her birthday extravaganza, my first task was to whip up a doggie birthday cake! Most dog birthday cake recipes I came across included some sort of flour or grain, however, I wanted a healthy alternative that was as much in keeping with her usual fresh food diet as possible.
After much searching and Pinteresting, I came across these fabulous creations by 17 Apart and Lady & Pups. Inspiration struck and Poppy was set to have a birthday cake fit for a (slightly fussy, allergy prone, grain free, organic where possible, raw fed) doggie princess.

Although it looks impressive, the cake was super easy to put together. It basically involved oven baking some meatloaf patties, assembling them with mashed potato in between each layer, covering the entire thing with mashed potato “icing”, and then decorating with crunchy bacon shards and sweet potato piping.
Feel free to get creative and alter the recipe to suit your own pup’s tastes and dietary requirements. Poppy wouldn’t normally have white potato as part of her diet, as it’s quite starchy and high in carbohydrates, however, even dogs can afford a cheat day from time to time.
Poppy certainly enjoyed every last bite of her meatloaf birthday cake, although she didn’t appreciate me making her wait until after our little photo shoot before she could dig in.
Does your pup also get spoiled on their birthday? Let me know what kind of dog birthday party shenanigans you get up to in your household by leaving me a comment below.

Where exactly is the recipe?
Hi Jocy. I initially just had a “guide” on how to create this cake with the infographic, brief description and links to the original recipes that inspired it. I have now included a more detailed recipe with the exact measurements, ingredients, and method I used. Thanks so much for stopping by and also for your feedback. Rita x
